Run safely in the dark

Running lamps and lighting for the darker days.

If you're combining work and running, chances are you'll need to head out either before or after your workday. In summer, that's usually no problem, but in winter, it's a different story.

Cold, rain, or even snow. And most importantly: the dark. That's why it's essential to equip yourself with proper lighting, so you can see clearly and - even more important - be seen by other road users.

How to stay visible in low lights?

Reflective running apparel

A well-known way to stay safe and visible while running in the dark is by wearing fluorescent clothing. Collections like to On Lumos Collection are a great first step in the right direction. But many other brands offer reflective apparel.

Lighting running accessories

In this case, the more, the better truly applies. Combine reflective clothing with lighting accessories, such as a light-up vest or reflective bands.

Running lights to see clearly in the dark

Your safety in the dark isn't just about being seen.

Your visibility to others is important, but what you can see is just as crucial for running safely during the darker hours of the day.

A running lamp is the ideal companion for early morning or late evening runs. You can opt for a headlamp, but there are also lights designed to be worn around your waist or chest. The best choice depends on your personal preference - the key is to test what works best for you.

During the Houffa Trail, I gave the Petzl Nao RL a proper test. What a beast of a headlamp! Super lightweight on the head, an impressive beam, and easy to operate. It made navigating on technical section noticeably easier.

Tip: a headlamp has the big advantage of moving with your line of sight. When you turn your head to the left, the light follows. That way, you always have illumination exactly where you are looking.
