Technical running clothes - how it affects the price tag
Did you already buy running apparel from Runners' lab? Than you probably noticed that the price tag is somewhat higher than in regular shops. The reason for that? Because we have better running clothes. But what does that mean, 'better'? We would like to explain.
Comfort in running clothes
When it comes to running clothes, the comfort of your shirt, pants or jacket comes first, doesn't it? You can ask every frequent runner: sports clothing that doesn't fit well, is annoying. It can even lead to blisters and chafing. The comfort of your outfit during a training or race can really be the dealbreaker, especially during the long work.
The two factors that contributes most to that comfort, are undoubtedly the fit and fabrics.
That's why we, at Runners' lab, only offer brands with a good reputation, of which we know the fit is good. That guarantees freedom of movement while you run, so you won't be distracted by your clothes. In case of sports bras, the fit should support your breasts optimal, which avoids irreparable damage.
Also the quality of the fabric is important for your running comfort. Running gear made out of poor materials will show wear sooner or the elasticity will decrease after a few washings. Not that comfortable, a running tight that fits loose around your legs, or one that you have to pull up every five steps. The same is true for running socks or sports bras. That leads to friction and irritation.
Functionality and innovation in running clothes
A second facet that determines the price tag of your technical running outfit, is its specific goal. Some high-performance fabrics are specially made with a funtionality in mind.
You can opt for odor-wicking clothes. The collection of Smartwool is the perfect example. These clothes are made out of Merino wool. The advantages of Merino wool are interesting, especially for runners and walkers.
Another technical function is ripstop. Ripstop fabrics are woven fabrics, often made out of nylon. They use reinforcing techniques, which makes them more resistant to tearing or ripping. That's very useful during trail runs, where branches, stones or twigs are prominent.
These two things are just a small selection of the possible functionalities in running clothing. Most brands keep investigating in innovation. Sometimes, they even collaborate with athletes to design the best possible running gear. But you can guess: that takes time and money, which affects the price tag.
Other technical aspects of clothes can be the featherlight weight, compression, water- or wind resistancy, reflection...
Looks and design of running clothes
The focus is certainly on the functionality of clothes, but the looks are not unimportant. As a runner, you want to feel nice and look good during running, without compromising on comfort. The esthetic aspect plays a role in our decision process. Different patterns, colors and fits comes from the creativity of the brands. But that affects, of course, the price tag.
Working conditions and production of running clothes
The working conditions and labour costs are different for all countries. To give an example: Falke, the brand known for its socks, produces their socks in Germany, where the costs are slightly higher than in countries as Asia. That cost is calculated in the price tag of the running gear.
