What kind of clothes are good for running?

There is plenty of running clothes available on the market, but not all clothes are comfortable and qualitative. Lots of features determines the comfort of your run. Breathability, the fit, fabrics, water resistancy... These are just a few examples of the technical aspects clothes have. And these also explain the price of some apparel.

What to wear in different temperatures?

The weather app is probably the most used app for runners right before they go outside for a run. The weather conditions therefore determine your running outfit of the day. On warm summer days, you probably choose other clothes than in winter season. But what to wear in these different temperatures?

What to wear for winter running: in winter, you can dress according the 'three layer system'. As the name gives away: you wear three layers. You start with a baselayer. As second layer, you wear a shirt that doesn't fit too tight, and is meant to isolate. As an extra protection, you can choose for a (waterproof) rain jacket.

An additional benefit is reflection. Clothes and apparel with reflective details keep you safe and visible on dark winter days.

The best summer running gear: summer season asks for breathable and ventilated clothes. Let's say running shorts, short sleeve shirts or sweat-wicking underwear

The fit

Tight: tight clothing mostly prevent chafing when you move. Plus, the streamlined design better controls your movements, so you will not be distracted. Included in this category, is compression. That gives extra support where you need it.

Loose: on the other hand, you can choose for loose running clothes. It feels airy and relaxed on your body. Especially in summer, it feels less oppressive.

Longer: running shirts, jackets or vests exist with a longer back. That creates extra coverage against rain, mud or cold breezes.

The fabrics

Ripstop: ripstop fabrics are woven fabrics, often made out of nylon. They use a reinforcing technique, which makes them more resistant to tearing and ripping.

Odor resistant: clothes may have a anti-bacterial function to avoid smells. That's useful when activities get longer or heavier. The clothes and accessories of Smartwool are the perfect example because of the Merino wool.

Elastic: the amount of elasticity is mainly relevant for running tights. A tight should fit relatively close to your legs. When there is less elasticity, that tight feeling dissapears, which leads to less comfort.

What about sports bras?

Uncomfortable running clothes is unpleasant, but the wrong sports bra has bigger consequences. Did you know that the wrong or worn-out sports bra can lead to irreversible damage to your breasts? You better wear the right circumference, cup size and fit.

To be sure you are wearing the right sports bra, we recommend to make an appointment in one of our Runners' lab stores. Our (female) advisors give you personal advice about your size, the design, fit...
