The name Altra comes from the Latin word Altera, which means ‘to fix something that is broken’. This reflects the brand’s mission to reduce running injuries. The founders’ original goal was not to manufacture shoes. They simply wanted to find a solution to prevent injuries. Zero drop Altra’s philosophy is that running shoes with a zero-drop platform – where the heel and forefoot are positioned at the same height from the ground – help reduce the risk of injuries.
The first Altra prototypes were made using a toaster. Existing running shoes were heated to soften the soles, after which the heel cushioning was removed to create a flat platform.

Wider toe box: Altra shoes are designed with extra room at your toes, allowing them to spread naturally.
Zero to low drop: this means that your heel and toes are positioned at (almost) the same height from the ground. The result is a more natural running experience, similar to running barefoot, while keeping your feet in their natural position. Different from barefoot shoes is that Altra shoes have some cushioning for comfort.
